Project Overview:

CalTekNet is seeking skilled GIS volunteers to develop geospatial data sets and mapping resources focused on documenting and visualizing the California Digital Divide from 2010 to 2025 and beyond. This project aims to reconnect former CTCNet affiliates and create valuable resources for non-profit organizations working to bridge the digital divide, particularly in partnership with BridgeLA.org.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and aggregate geospatial datasets for California counties
  • Develop map layers showing digital divide demographics and changes
  • Create exportable shapefiles and CSV files for open-source GIS applications
  • Design instructional resources and how-to media for curriculum integration
  • Manage ESRI credits efficiently while developing comprehensive visualizations
  • Import/export datasets between various platforms
  • Support citizen science localized research initiatives

  • Open Street Maps (OSM)
  • Ushahidi platform (http://ctn.ushahidi.io)
  • Sahana Eden
  • QGIS and Leaflet
  • County and city data resources

Desired Skills:
  • Experience with OSGeoLive applications
  • Knowledge of Ushahidi or Sahana Eden platforms

  • Curriculum development experience
  • Documentation skills

  • Experience with GIS mapping tools and principles
  • Familiarity with either ArcGIS or open-source GIS alternatives
  • Data analysis and visualization capabilities
  • Basic understanding of digital divide issues
