A Message from the PresidentWe Thrived We Arrived and Weve SURVIVED! Coming together is a beginning. Working together is progress. Staying together is success. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Inc., the organization founded by the late Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1915, has for many years selected an annual theme for educational purposes. The 2007 theme is: From Slavery to Freedom: The Story of Africans in the Americas. The transition from slavery to freedom represents one of the major themes in the history of the African Diaspora in the Americas. Under and against the rule of various powers, Africans experienced emancipation during the course of the nineteenth century. The rebirth of freedom resulted from what was at the time the worlds most destructive Civil War, a war in which liberated slaves and free Blacks played a vital role in determining the victor and securing their own liberty. Regardless of the path to freedom, Africans peoples in the New World had to continue to struggle for liberation. This year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Inc., and the Los Angeles Chapter, Our Authors Study Club, Inc. dedicates the national theme to the struggle of people of African descent to achieve freedom and equality. It truly Takes teamwork to make the dream work. For over 61 years, Our Authors Study Club, Inc. and the City of Los Angeles join the community in celebrating African American history. We publicize the many exciting programs and events each year. Our history is important!!! If you dont know where youve been Please plan to join us as we celebrate our history. Dr. Genevieve A.
