Most picked up at LULA sponsered install fest, or recently learned by experience.
1) Avoid 6.10 versions of Ubuntu (Thank you Ralf P.)
2) downloadable from: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/
(Thanks http://www.distrowatch.org)
3) may have problems with newer versions (7.*), if
it seems to crash a lot, say every 5 minutes or less,
you may need to add to the boot parameters:
noapic nolapic
This is probably needed if 6.* or older versions boot and run ok
but 7.* gives a problem.
(thanks Dan K.)4) the Automatix script, available at http://www.getautomatix.com/
is the hot ticket for getting the install up to a friendly state
for the typical user.
*Versions of this script are available for several Debian
based distros*
(thanks Dan K.)5) "LTS" == "Long Term Support" ~= Debian stable

According to Charles W., leader of LiLAX, the only difference between the different flavors of Ubuntu, such as Edubuntu, etc. is the mix of applications that are installed by default. They all come out of the same code base, so it's just a matter of installing as you normally would to get any application running on a particular OS install.
